Sold exclusively by Myers Drug,
this ornament commemorates the heritage of one of the western
forts of America’s past. Fort Concho was located in what is now
San Angelo, TX, and is part of the nationally-known “Texas Forts
Trail.”
The History
The following information is from the Fort Concho website:
Established in 1867 along the banks of the Concho River, Fort
Concho was built to protect frontier settlements, patrol and map
the vast West Texas region, and quell hostile threats in the area.
In June 1889, the last soldiers marched
away from Fort Concho and the fort was deactivated. After 22 years
Fort Concho's role in settling the Texas frontier was over.
Today, Fort Concho National Historic
Landmark encompasses most of the former army post and includes
twenty-three original and restored structures.
In addition to the above information,
Fort Concho was also home to the Buffalo soldiers. These were
black troops who proved time and again to be competent,
professional soldiers who worked and showed courage and valor in
combat. They received the name “buffalo soldiers” from Indians
who likened the texture of their hair to the coat of a buffalo.
